At the height of the Gold Rush Rough and Ready was the third largest town in Nevada County after Nevada City and Grass Valley. A fire on July 8, 1859 consumed the entire town due to high winds and the town had no resources to combat the fire. Rough and Ready never recovered from the fire and only a small number of resident’s rebuilt while the majority left town since mining was no longer productive in the area.

Maria E. Brower is the author of Nevada City, Gold Rush Towns of Nevada County and It Happened at the National. A native Californian, she has lived in Nevada County for 35 years. A Life Member of the Nevada County Historical Society and a genealogist, she has written extensively on genealogy and Northern California history.
